  100th Goshen Fair Special Contests

Each of the departments listed below will have a special 100th Goshen Fair Contest. Please see each department in the Goshen Fair Premium Book for more details.
  1. Arts & Crafts: Create a fair/farm animal using any media, see page 72.
  2. Children’s Department: A diorama of a scene, past or present, from the Goshen Fair, see page 58.
  3. Corn, Potatoes, Vegetables and Fruit: One pepper plant growing in a container for the patio, see page 37.
  4. Farm Products, Canning: Dried/dehydrated fruit or vegetable exhibited in an unsealed half pint jar, see page 43.
  5. Flowers: Roses, lavender, hydrangeas, jasmine and/or ferns arranged on a straw hat, see page 41.
  6. Homemade Bakery: Cake decorating contest with the theme being the 100th Fair, see page 45.
  7. Needlework and Sewing: A fair themed 12" square block using any method of needlework or sewing, see page 54.
  8. Photography: Photos taken Saturday at the Fair are to be e-mailed to the Fair office before 9am on Sunday. The winning photos will be printed and displayed in Photography, see page 79.



Hay Bale Toss Contest
Saturday, September 1st in the Show Ring.
Registration opens at 3:00 p.m. near Show Ring Announcer’s Booth.
First throw at 4 p.m.
Sponsored by Goff’s Equipment Service, LLC, Litchfield, CT

General Information
  1. Contest is open to everyone.
  2. No registration fee for this event.
  3. Positions for competing will be determined by lottery.
  4. An entry form must be signed by a parent for all participants under 18 years of age giving their consent for their child to participate. Likewise, an entry form must be signed by all participants 18 and over giving their consent to participate.
Rules
  1. Contestant will select the bale to be thrown from the bales provided.
  2. Each contestant will be allowed one (1) throw.
  3. Crossing the foul line with one’s body will result in disqualification.
  4. The bale must remain inside the twenty (20) foot wide throwing area at all times.
  5. The distance will be measured from the nearest point where the bale hits the ground.
  6. In the event of a tie - a throwoff of one (1) bale will determine the winner.
Classes
  1. Male, Youth, up to and including 11 yr. old.
  2. Male, Youth, age 12-14 years of age.
  3. Male, Youth, age 15-17 years of age.
  4. Male, Adult, age 18-49 years of age.
  5. Male, Adult, age 50 years of age and over.
  6. Female, Youth, up to and including 11 yr. old.
  7. Female, Youth, age 12-14 years of age.
  8. Female, Youth, age 15-17 years of age.
  9. Female, Adult, age 18-49 years of age.
  10. Female, Adult, age 50 years of age and over.
Prizes Per Class
    First prize - Goshen Fair baseball cap, ribbon and bragging rights
    Second prize - Goshen Fair patch and ribbon
    Third prize - Goshen Fair patch and ribbon

Nail Driving Contest
Saturday, September 1st in the Show Ring. Contest begins at 4 p.m.
Registration opens at 3:00 p.m. near Show Ring Announcer’s Booth.
Sponsored by Lowes, and LaPlaca Oil and Propane

Rules
  1. Contest is open to all youth 6-12 years of age
  2. Object of the contest is to drive a nail as far as possible into a block of wood with two (2) hammer blows.
  3. Wood, hammer and nails will be furnished by the Fair Association.
  4. Safety glasses must be worn by all contestants.
  5. The nail will be started in the block by the fair official. Nail may not be touched or held in any manner except by the two hammer blows.
  6. The winner will be determined by measuring the length of the nail
    protruding from the wood block. The shortest distance will be declared the winner.
  7. In the event of ties, a “Nail Drive Off” will be held.
  8. Judge’s decision will be final
Classes
  1. Youth, ages 6-7 years of age.
  2. Youth, ages 8-9 years of age.
  3. Youth, ages 10-12 years of age.

    First prize - Lowes Kids Building Kit and ribbon
    Second prize - Lowes Kids Building Kit and ribbon

Pie Eating Contest
Sunday, September 2nd, Tent in Entertainment Area.
First contest at 3 p.m.
Registration opens at 2 p.m. at the Tent.
Sponsored by Leo’s Lunch

General Information
  1. Contest is open to everyone.
  2. No registration fee for this event.
  3. Contestants will be divided by age into three (3) categories.
  4. Registration will be limited to 10 participants per session. First come, first entered! Contestants must be entered by 2:30 p.m.
  5. An entry form must be signed by a parent for all participants under 18 years of age giving their consent for their child to participate. Likewise, an entry form must be signed by all participants 18 and over giving their consent to participate.
Rules
  1. No hands can be used.
  2. The first person to finish his/her whole pie and stand up will be declared the winner!
  3. In the event of a tie, the contestant of the two competitors with the biggest “pie smile” will be determined as the overall winner for that specific contest.
Grounds for disqualification
  1. Starting prior to the start signal
  2. Visible signs of sickness
Classes
  1. Child, ages 6-12 years of age.
  2. Teen, ages 13-19 years of age.
  3. Adult, ages 20 years of age and over.

Skillet Throw Contest
Sunday, September 2nd, First Contest at 4:30 p.m.
Professional Skillets donated by Mitchell Volvo

General Information
  1. Open to all women ages 16 years of age and over.
  2. Show ring behind gazebo.
  3. No registration fee for this event.
  4. Registration 2:30-4:00 at the Secretary’s Booth.
  5. Skillet provided by fair. Skillet weighs approx. 3 lbs. 11oz.
Rules
  1. One throw per person.
  2. Throw will be straight out and underhand.
  3. Distance off center will be subtracted from distance thrown.
  4. Measurements are taken from where the skillet first lands.
  5. Crossing foul line will result in disqualification.
  6. In the event of a tie, a throw off will be conducted.
  7. Throw off for 1st place winners of each age group. 2 throws per person, best of two.
Classes
  1. Age 16-29 years of age.
  2. Age 30-45 years of age.
  3. Age 46-64 years of age.
  4. Age 65 years of age and over.

Adult Spelling Bee
Monday, September 3rd, 2:00 p.m., Tent in Entertainment Area.

The 100th Goshen Fair Adult Spelling Bee is a team-based spelling compe­tition, where adults (18 years old or older) form teams of three adults compete in the Bee. There is no “solo spelling.” During the Spelling Bee, teams will collaborate on each spelling word during a specific time period and present their word on a white board for consideration by the judges. Our goal is to recruit 12 teams. There is no entry fee.
